WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS THERAPY

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curve in the spine. But we know it’s so much more than that! Our complicated spine does not just bend sideways. An abnormal curve will also cause multiplanar changes including rotation. No two curves are identical.

In the past generic physical therapy has treated scoliosis with general techniques for posture, strengthening, and some stretching of collapsed areas.

Scoliosis-specific therapy (Schroth-Method based) will look at your individual, unique curve and establish a plan of care tailor-made for you with focus on elongation, realignment and decompression of collapsed areas.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF SCHROTH?

The main goal of the Schroth Method is to stop curve progression and hopefully avoid a fusion surgery. But other goals include:

  • improve posture
  • increase muscle strength
  • reduce pain
  • improve pelvic alignment
  • improve breathing
  • improve overall awareness of body positioning
  • in many cases there can be a significant reduction in the Cobb angle

Studies have been showing that Schroth is very effective in most cases when applied with consistency and more people are starting to see results. John Hopkins offers Schroth for their scoliosis patients.

Here are some recent studies:
Study 1 – Schroth paired with Bracing found to be superior than Bracing alone
Study 2 – Schroth improved quality of life, halted curve progression, improved balance and shoulder alignment
Study 3 – Schroth reduced Cobb angle on adult

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE FIRST VISIT

The physical therapist will ask you questions about your general health and concerns. They will take “before” pictures of your posture in different positions and review your X Rays. You will be educated regarding your specific type of curve and a home exercises program will be established. You may begin learning specific exercises for your unique curve.

YOUR THERAPIST

Dr. Rebeca Correalima, PT, DPT, OCS

Physical Therapist / Founder

Rebeca was born in Brazil but grew up right here in South Florida. Growing up, she practiced gymnastics at a competitive level and went on to coach through college. In 2009 she graduated from FIU with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

In 2011 she moved to California where she practiced in Los Angeles, returning to Miami 4 years later. She then went on to specialize in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2017. With over 12 years under her belt she has experience treating not only orthopedic conditions, but vestibular conditions, post strokes, Bell’s Palsy, and Parkinson’s to name a few. She is also proficient in providing manual PT, dry needling, cupping, kinesio-taping and graston.

In 2021 she decided to add another specialty to her belt and she was trained under the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School to better serve her scoliosis clients. Working in a fast paced, high volume clinic, she quickly realized she was not able to provide the type of therapy she wanted to so in 2022 she decided to open up her own clinic to better serve the local scoliosis community and put her newly learned skills to use.

Rebeca is married and has 2 little boys. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her family, travel and eat good food! Her happy place is the beach and she practices CrossFit and some Pilates when she can.

Rebeca is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
